The "hash run" is a form of social marathon with deliberate sidetracks and shortcuts to allow runners in various states of fitness to reach their goal all at the same time so they can have a drink together. The Enfield club thought it would be nice to have running shirts that could be read from above if the wearer is passed out on the pub floor.
